Project Statement:
The focus of the work is the additive aspect of physical structure, support, and growth. The chainmail, in a rectangular form made up of over 9,000 multicolored rings, takes on the appearance of a “banner;” however, with the bottom of the frame absent the chainmail, or “banner,” contained inside has the ability to go beyond its borders. While the nature of chainmail is fluid on its own, the goal that the structure adds is to distribute even amounts of tension along the edges forcing the chainmail to become taut yet secured. Referencing themes of textile and fabrication, the end result is to create a public hanging apparatus of visual patterns of color, design. The “banner” will have the ability to move or spin as a man-made object intruding in an environmental space, while at the same time becoming its own entity, presence, and performance.
