Project Statement:

My work focuses on meditation through process and material experimentation. Currently, my practice incorporates glass and ceramics fused together. The clay can be refined and detailed while the glass melts in randomized manners. When working with two materials where one is controllable and the other unpredictable, I take risks working with the kiln and embrace the final outcomes.

My subject matter is influenced by my experiences within food and customer service industries. Subconsciously, the content of my work has begun to reference the creation of dishware and table settings. The pieces have distinct forms such as small bowls, plates, and silverware. I have worked closely with these objects through many hours of handling and bussing duties. The forms I create from glass fusing and ceramics are meant to be sculptural and nonfunctional; the complete opposite of the dishware’s existence. The glass, in its uncontrollable nature, is meant to mimic the leftover food that remains crusted on the bowls, plates, and silverware. It is the remains of a person’s presence.

The clay and glass communicate a relationship of duality. When I work with clay, I do so both by hand and on the potter's wheel. When I work with glass, I cut the glass at different geometric and miscellaneous shapes. The raw or glazed appearance of the ceramic body in relation to the gleaming bright colored glass when fired is unusual yet unique. What intrigues me is how each material complements the other through surface texture, the rough and smooth qualities. Additionally, material manipulation through tension and pressure allows for cracks to appear in the glass while still fused to the clay.
